Chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans (CSPGs) are proteoglycans consisting of a protein core and a chondroitin sulfate side chain. They are known to be structural components of a variety of human tissues, including cartilage, and also play key roles in neural development and glial scar formation. They are known to be involved in certain cell processes, such as cell adhesion, cell growth, receptor binding, cell migration, and interaction with other extracellular matrix constituents.

CSPGs are known to be part of the glial scar that forms post injury, acting as a barrier to prevent axon extension and regrowth, preventing regrowth up to 82%.
There are four different types of CSPGs that are upregulated after a spinal cord injury, neurocan, brevican, phosphacan, and versican.

It has been shown in many studies that the enzyme chondroitinase (Chase) degrades inhibitory CSPGs. After the CSPGs are degraded axonal (nerves in the spinal cord) sprouting improves and functional recovery can be achieved.
However Chrondroitinase only survives for a short amount of time in the spinal cord. While there is much research going on to fix the time it survives, delivery needs to be directly into the spinal cord. An invasive procedure to deliver it means that it will require hospital visits, take more resources and have a higher overall cost.

CSPG Reduction Peptide (CRP) can degrade CSPGs in the same way as Chrondroitinase is able to.
Delivery is via a subcutaneous injection daily over the treatment period.

CRP is delivered daily via a subcutaneous injection. The peptide crosses the blood brain barrier into the spinal cord. It then breaks down CSPGs.
